Provirus - A provirus is a retrovirus that has integrated itself into the DNA of a host cell. To do this, the RNA of the retrovirus was transcribed into DNA by reverse transcriptase, then inserted into the host genome by an integrase.

Viral replication - Viral replication is the term used by virologists to describe the propagation of biological viruses during the infection process in the target host cells. When used in the strictest sense, the term refers specifically to the amplification of the viral genome in the host cell.

Endogenous retrovirus - Retroviruses are viruses that reverse-transcribe their RNA into DNA for integration into the host's genome. Human and other mammalian endogenous retroviruses are retroviruses thought to be derived from ancient infections of germ-cells; as such their proviruses are passed on to the next generation.

Temperate (virology) - In virology, temperate refers to the life cycle a phage is able to perform. The phage usually integrates its genome into its host chromosome, becoming a prophage.
